Hyperleggera

Happy Year Zero

Today marks the first birthday of Hyperleggera and what better way to mark the occasion than with a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera chained to the very ground.

Hasn’t been smooth sailing now, has it? A year ago, the ghost of Bernd Rosemeyer made a guest appearance in these pages, promising white riots instead of white goods.

It has certainly been a year to remember. I set out to create a blog about cars like no other, to mark these strange days we live in, where the automobile seems to teeter on the inflection point of irrelevance. Since then, the world economy has gone into a tailspin and even mighty General Motors is now bankrupt.

But cars are still wonderful things to care about. We will always need pointless cars which rev halfway to the Moon. To not care about such machines is to lose all faith in progress and to lose that is to lose the very thing that makes us human. Whether cars are powered by V12’s or scramjets is beside the point.

Creating this site has been a humbling experience. Making great looking stuff worth reading day in and day out is hard—and you must have noticed that Hyperleggera’s publication is rather on a different schedule. Complicating matters is that a few months ago, I was hired by Gawker Media to write for its car blog Jalopnik.

But we have a great little team here and a great bunch of future material and one of these days, this will turn into a site worth coming back to week after week.

Speaking of said team: none of this would have been possible without the lovely photography of Balázs and Máté and the incessant prodding, razor sharp production and occasional watercoloring from Natalie.

Thank you—and thank you all who have read our posts, looked at our photographs and art, watched our videos, posted comments and contributed with server space, cars and time. Do stick with us. Hyperleggera is not dead. Far from it.
