Masterful! I'm still grinning at the thought of Herr Schadenfreude’s Bimmer-emblazoned groin. I feel my hair blowing back at the memory of my own BMW Munich experience.

"What are you doing here?" was what Viviane, the Z8 buyers' factory tour director asked when I stumbled in from the city cold. Whether or not she actually spoke the words, or just gave me the silvery stare, I can't remember. It was 2001, in February, and there was snow on my head. On my face was the customary three-day growth of beard worn by young American guys who backpack in Europe. On hers was contempt for the same. For a brief moment I tried to stand straight and proud, but my scoliosis and 45-lb rucksack had other ideas.

Nonetheless, I said I was there to see "skilled men with hammers pound out some Fisker goodness."

Viviane, who probably had no idea who Henrik Fisker was, but knew from her experiences as a booth professional/international lawyer/assassin that I probably wasn't a Z8 buyer, managed an exacting smile despite her obvious confusion, and handed me a brochure for the car. I asked her about the Z8 tour, and she told me to return for the experience when I was "serious." I nodded. The top button of my coat popped off at that exact moment, landing on the silver floor with the sound of futility.

I thought to myself, next time I'm going to shave before trying this.

@ discontinuuity: So why did he hand his camera over? Couldn’t he have simply walked away? I suppose he would not be able to continue with the tour, but I’d rather that than loose a camera.

Agnes gave it back after we’d left the premises. I’ve still got it, its latest outing was shooting a cooking spread for the latest issue of PresenTense (page 49):

http://issuu.com/presentense/docs/pt7

Very good writing, by the way. Some of the best prose I’ve read in awhile.

Why, thank you!

If you dig deep enough, you can still find the original artcle in the depths of the Totalcar editing system. Sadly it's not public, so even Hungarians, who could perhaps understand the original, will just have to stick with the English version.

And gone is the God of Surfaced Flames too. Probably he designs battery acid covers now. They are a work of art, some say.
